What to Do

1. Have everyone sit in a circle, then ask the children to identify the shape that describes how the group is sitting right now.

2. Explain to the children that you are all going to stand up and walk around this circle singing a song, and that each child will have a turn choosing how everyone in the circle should walk.

3. Chant: “Let’s walk in a circle, a circle, a circle, let’s walk in a circle, just like _______.” (Name a child)

4. The child named changes the way he is walking in some way (stomping, tiptoeing, walking in a squat, and so on).

5. Everyone walks like the leader child for a bit, and then you can repeat the chant, choosing a new child to lead.

6. Continue until every child has had a chance to be the leader.

Extenders

Put very young children in the center of the group. They will enjoy watching the other children walk in silly ways and they may begin imitating them.

Use masking tape to make different shapes on the floor or the ground outside. Walk along the tape, changing the chant to reflect the new shape.
